EDIT: I originally did these concepts a while ago, but I came across them going through some folders. I just made some updates that I've wanted to for a while. I'd still love to do an illustration with one of them eventually.
These are some Green Lantern concept variations I recently did in my free time. In contrast to the first film, where the suits seemed to reflect the anatomy of each GL, I decided to explore the route of a galactic defender; considering stars, nebulae, and elements (like alloys/minerals/crystals) imagery. While the overall quality of a film falls on the various people working on it, I believe Idris Elba could easily take the character of John Stewart to that level we all hope for. Personally, he's easily one of my favorite actors when you consider the TV series Luther and many of his other blockbuster appearances.
What do I know, I'm just a concept artist. Anyways, I hope you enjoy these as much as I did making them.
And you're right about Idris too. I mean, I like the Rock and all, but Idris is actually BLACK like the character is supposed to be plus he's a great actor. Johnson is good, but he's actually south Pacific Islander (I keep getting Hawaiian, Maori, Polynesian, and tons of other responses. There has to be a definitive answer on that one).
And personally I'd go for the better actor anyway, which would be Idris here.
As for your designs, that middle one really blows it away! It really gives the feel that the whole universe is at his beck and call or that the power of the universe is almost contained in those shoulders. Really powerful imagery here.
The second one looks a wee bit ST:TNG to me, especially across the shoulders. I like the first and third best, especially the third one's treatment of the legs and feet.
I agree with you on Elba as John Stewart! He'd be fab!
These look pretty fantastic.
I've only seen Elba in Pacific Rim but I'd love to see him as John Stewart as well.
I really like the upper body of the middle one, but the legs seem a little weird to me.
and I'm sure I'm imposing, but I think they'd all work a bit better if the costume had some definition to it - shoulder or knee pads of some sort, raised armor in places, or shaped boots, maybe.
Just my opinion.
